Celebrating the International Day of Play: 400 Ninja Smiles and Counting

Last night (11th June), Ninja Valley Hamilton and Christchurch came alive with the sound of squeals, laughter, and determination as over 400 tamariki and rangatahi took over our arenas for a free two-hour blast — all in celebration of UNICEF’s International Day of Play (11 June).

In partnership with two organisations doing powerful mahi for youth — The Graeme Dingle Foundation in Christchurch and The Waterboy in Hamilton — we proudly opened our doors to 150 young ninjas in Christchurch and 250 in Hamilton for an unforgettable evening of movement, fun, and empowerment.

As passionate supporters of the mission behind International Day of Play, we believe in the vital importance of play as more than just fun — it's how young people build resilience, forge friendships, develop lifelong learning habits, and form positive relationships with health and fitness.

Why is play so important?

"Play isn’t just fun, it’s essential. Through play, children learn to forge connections with others, build a wide range of leadership skills, develop resilience, navigate relationships and social challenges, and conquer their fears. Play helps children to thrive in a rapidly changing world", according to the UNICEF website.

Both the Graeme Dingle Foundation and The Waterboy are champions of this mission, helping to level the playing field for youth and connect them with experiences that grow confidence and open up opportunity. We were honoured to host their communities and watch their young people rise to the ninja challenge.

Penny Boyce, manager at The WaterBoy with Lugtons expressed appreciation of our Ninja efforts. "We are extremely grateful to Ninja Valley for including our community in their International Day of Play celebration! Over 100 kiwi kids got to experience everything they have to offer all for free, we are blown away by the support that Ninja Valley has shown our rangatahi and their whanau and friends!"

To every child who showed up with energy, every mentor who cheered them on, and every family that believes in the power of play — thank you. We’re proud to stand alongside organisations like these and to use our spaces not only for fun, but for purpose.

Ninja Valley is committed to regular community initiatives that open up our spaces, our people and our excitement to those that are often less fortunate. The Power of Play is universal but often not in reach to all, and that's where we come in.

Here’s to more play, more movement, and more momentum. Let’s keep building the habits that last a lifetime.
